Rudolf Knepper, 66, Head of Printing, Logistics and Human Resources, will be retiring from Axel Springer AG at the expiration of his term of office on December 31, 2011.
From January 1, 2012 the management board of Axel Springer AG will be extended from a four to a five-member committee. The departments run by Rudolf Knepper will be reallocated.
Jan Bayer, 41, Publishing Director of the regional and subscription newspapers (WELT GROUP / BERLINER MORGENPOST / HAMBURGER ABENDBLATT), becomes Head of Subscription Newspapers and Printing Facilities.
Ralph Büchi, 53, President of Axel Springer International and CEO of Axel Springer Schweiz, is appointed as Head of the International Division.
The responsibility for the Human Resources and Purchasing Divisions is allocated to CFO Lothar Lanz, and the IT, Logistics & Services Divisions to Dr. Andreas Wiele, Head of BILD Group and Magazines.
The editors-in-chief of the newspapers will continue to report directly to the CEO, Dr. Mathias Döpfner.
"When Rudolf Knepper leaves Axel Springer at the end of the year, he will have been connected with the company for almost 40 years. Of this he spent 17 years as a member of the Management Board, during which time he earned the very high esteem and respect of his colleagues, employees and business partners through his obliging, open and approachable style of communication and negotiation, as well as in his daily dealings. He does not only represent continuity, loyalty and reliability, but also the creative drive necessary to successfully promote the digital transformation of Axel Springer AG," said the Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Dr. Giuseppe Vita. "We thank him very much for this and look forward to the next few months of active collaboration which remain. At the same time we wish that Rudolf Knepper remains closely connected to the company in the future."
Rudolf Knepper joined Axel Springer AG in 1973. He held various management positions in the Printing Division. During this time he has played a major role in the design and construction of the world's most modern offset printing works. This created the technical preconditions for our modern four-color newspaper printing. He has been a member of the management board since August 1994.
Dr. Giuseppe Vita on the new appointments: "In particular I am pleased that in Jan Bayer and Ralph Büchi we were able to recruit excellent managers from within our own ranks. Both have characterized the economic success and the dynamic development of Axel Springer AG in recent years. With them we are ensuring continuity in the management team. And by extending this body, we are creating a leadership structure that is even better equipped to meet the requirements of the markets."
